The Last Twelve Drops

celebrate the inevitableA little over a year ago, I started running weekly Celebration Friday posts on my food blog.  When I wound that blog down, I took Celebration Fridays over to my home decor blog.  And now I’m bringing them here.  Why?

Because I believe that there’s a lot to celebrate in this life.  Yes, the big events: birthdays, anniversaries, retirement.  And the small ones, too: getting over a cold, learning to say hello in another language.

I also believe in celebrating life’s inevitabilities.  If I had it to do again, I’d have thrown a party when I discovered my first grey hair.  I believe in going out for dinner when you get that promotion and when you don’t.  Celebrate the attempt, celebrate the belief and really, truly, celebrate the unmitigated disasters.

Because they all go to make up a life, your life.  This is what you signed for when they cut the cord and you decided to start breathing on your own.  It’s all part of the adventure, so why not celebrate it all?

That said, here’s a Celebration Friday post from last year that I particularly like.  Please let me know your thoughts.

The leaves have started dropping here in Southern Ontario.   Summer is on the wane.

So I take it as a moral imperative to spend every sunny afternoon that comes our way at this time of year out on a patio somewhere, soaking in the sunshine with a snack and a glass of wine. The fact that winter’s coming demands nothing less.

We need the warm memories for the cold months to come.

The last twelve drops, you ask?

My dad-in-law’s friend Mary told us about a study that reported that on average, the “empty” wine bottle has twelve drops remaining.  It’s as though the person who opened it has decided that “nearly empty” is the same as “empty”, given up and moved on.

But it’s not.  Just like “summer’s nearly over” is not the same as “summer’s over”.  The difference may be small.  The difference may only be a few hours, or a few drops or a few last precious anything.

But celebrated properly, those few remaining whatever’s can make some wonderful memories.  Celebrated properly, they can make all the difference in the world.

So this weekend, I will be celebrating the last twelve drops.  What will you be celebrating?

I will just say “amen”. I am sitting here with the toe of my daughter’s second sock in my lap, knitting a few stitches here and there as pages load. In a few minutes I will figure out what I want for breakfast, and then I’m going to sit down with a tape measure, another daughter’s doll, some gingham, and teach myself pattern drafting.

And then I will eat some chocolate!

I am celebrating my gypsy daughter returning home from a whirlwind tour and having my nest full again for this last week 🙂 and the fact that soccer season is now officially done for 2009 (as of 12:32 p.m.)!
